UNIZIK Staff Protest Five Years Unpaid Salaries

Some members of staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka have protested unpaid salaries, calling the attention of the Federal Government to their plight.

Demonstrating round the Awka campus of the University, the protesters who wore black, chanted different songs and bore banners and placards that bemoaned their plight.

They revealed that since they were employed in 2019 and 2020, they have not been paid their salaries leaving them in a terrible situation.

Speaking on behalf of other protesters in front of the Administration Building of the University, Mr. JK Ibezim, from the Department of Chemical Engineering said they have lost seven of their members just this year alone due to the suffering exacerbated by the country’s economic woes.

Mr. Ibezim stated that the constant assurances the University’s authorities had given them in the past that the issue will be resolved have not yielded any results and warned that they will take their protest to Abuja to see an end to their challenges.

Other protesters, Mr. Chinedu Nwune from the Department of Works and Services, Mrs. Queensly Asu from Botany Department, and Mr. Daniel Nzubechi from the Faculty of Environmental Science took turns to narrate their unfortunate situations and describe how they have been abandoned to their fate.

Responding, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu thanked the protesters for remaining peaceful in the course of their protest and once again assured that the University management is making effort to resolve the issues and once approval is given by the budget office and other processes followed and resolved, they would be paid.

Professor Ikechebelu noted he would be in Abuja tomorrow and his priority would be to see an end to the issue.
