The streets of Onitsha came alive with color, music and dance; as the youths of Onitsha Ado Kingdom held a spectacular street carnival ahead of the 2025 Ofala Festival of the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
Dressed in colourful traditional attires, the jubilant youths danced through major roads in Onitsha, including the iconic DMGS Roundabout, Awka Road, New Market Road, among others, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and unity of the kingdom.
The carnival, which attracted residents and visitors, featured various cultural displays that highlighted the diverse identities within Onitsha Ado Kingdom.
Speaking to the ABS during the event, a member of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Kate Chukwurah, and one of the organisers, Mrs. Adaeze Emeta, said the street carnival serves as an announcement of the prestigious Ofala Festival of the traditional ruler of Onitsha Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
They explained that the youth carnival gives hope that the cultural heritage of the kingdom will be sustained by the younger generation, noting that such events encourage cultural continuity and pride among the people.
Some of the youths who participated in the carnival, including the Onowu of the carnival, Engr. Tobechukwu Odiari, and a member of the Otu Odu, Miss. Obianuju Emeto, described the Ofala Festival as a highly anticipated celebration that provides a rare opportunity for the people to behold their revered monarch, who appears in public only on special occasions.
They commended the organisers of the event and expressed pride in the rich culture and identity of Onitsha, saying they are honoured to showcase their heritage to the world.
The street carnival, which brought excitement and fanfare to the city, marks the beginning of activities leading up to the 2025 Ofala Festival, one of the most prestigious cultural events in Igbo land.
