The Anambra State Commissioner for Heath, Dr Afam Obidike has charged local government mayors in the State to close down any school in their council areas that refuse children access to immunization. Dr. Obidike who gave the charge during stakeholders engagement meeting with the twenty-one local goverment area Mayors for upcoming Measles and Rubella Vaccine Introduction, urged the mayors to champion the immunization exercise, ensure that it is seamlessly done in their councils, and sack those that are not competent in doing the job.
The State Health Immunizations Officer, Mrs Edith Onwuka explained that the campaign is aimed at closing immunity gabs among eligible children, adding that cases of rubella disease have been detected in Njikoka, Aguata, Ihiala and Orumba North Local Goverment Areas, while the Mayor of Orumba North local goverment, Retired Captain Casmir Nwafor assured that the council area will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the exercise gets its desired results in the area.
In his remarks, the Traditional Ruler of Ifitedunu, Dunukofia local goverment Area, Igwe Emeka Ilouno who is a Public Health expert, commended the state government and their partners for doing a wonderful job, appealing to the mayors to own the project for it to achieve the desired results.
