Dozens of men from rural communities in Anambra State have praised the state government and the Carter Center for providing free surgeries to treat hydrocele, a painful and socially stigmatizing condition that causes scrotal swelling.
Correspondent, Chibuzor Obidike reports that Hydrocele, known locally as “Ibi”, is one of the visible effects of Lymphatic Filariasis, a neglected tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes.

Over hundred beneficiaries received the life-changing medical care during the second phase of the state-led hydrocelectomy programme, recently concluded at Enugwu-Ukwu, Ekwulobia, and Umueri General Hospitals, where Cosmas Chukwuneke from Nnewi and Charles Okoye from Enugwu-Ukwu said the surgery not only removed their pain but also restored their confidence.

Speaking at one of the centers, Professor Nuhu Dakum, a consultant urologist, explained that Hydrocele can severely limit a man’s mobility, livelihood, and social life, acknowledging that with the surgeries which is free of charge, the state is not just restoring health, but also restoring dignity.
