Commentary: Supporting Mrs Nonye Soludo’s Advocacy On Protection Of Environment

According to the wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, the environment is the closest bond we share with nature and it important to protect it from abuse because  what we give it, is actually what  it gives  back to us.

She noted that as concerns rise on human negligence of the environment which has caused so many harms to humanity and nature, there is need for change of perception and attitude  towards the environment to  save the planet from the growing  threats that could also harm humanity.

There is need to join the global  actions and drive towards  increased Advocacy, and support green solutions for the overall  well being of the  environment.

According to the Governor’s wife, there is equally need  to adopt sustainable actions and spread awareness on stopping biodiversity loss, reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as well as cutting down plastic waste to save the environment.

Plastic Pollution is a global problem which worsens as the population of the world continues to grow. The majority of plastic materials take decades if not centuries to breakdown. It is not only the accumulation of plastics that harms the environment

The fragments and toxins released during decomposition also  pollutes the soil and water.

Plastic Pollution create problems for plants, wildlife and even human population,  including killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals. Plastic is  a useful material, but it is also made from toxic compounds known to cause illness.

The present administration in Anambra state has demonstrated determination and political will as well as clear policy trust and objectives  to provide clean, safe ,green and healthy environment  across the state.

It has sustained efforts towards    removing  all illegal structures and scraps blocking roads  , streets and open spaces  as well as maintained effective and efficient waste management system.

The government is also cleaning and removing  structures obstructing drainage channels  , defacing the State, obstructing traffic and posing  great threat to lives and property of the citizenry. This will among other things ensure free flow of water and reduce devastation of flood.

To complement what the government is doing, resident  of the state should avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse or dumping of waste in drainage channels,  to avoid blocking  the natural flood channels which has negative  consequences  including forcing over flow of water which can escalate   erosion devastation.

Presently, Anambra State has the smallest land mass in Nigeria  due to the ravaging effects of erosion .The state government has committed so much resources  in erosion control projects .It is presently working on many erosion sites in the state to check further depletion of the land mass.

Again various agencies entrusted with the responsibilities of protecting the environment should work towards improving  environmental regulations and enforcement. This would ensure that individuals, organizations and companies  who abuse or  harming the environment are held accountable for their actions while residents of the state should see protection of the environment as a collective responsibility.

So there is need to join Dr Soludo in sustaining mass enlightenment of the  people on  the importance of preserving the environment.
