Awka Union USA/Canada Awards Scholarships To Over One Hundred Beneficiaries

Over one hundred indigenes of Awka in Awka South Local Government Area have been enrolled into  scholarships and skills acquisition programmes courtesy of their indigenes based in the United States of America and Canada under the auspices of Awka Union USA/Canada.

Speaking during the programme which was held at Ndichie hall Awka, the President General of Awka Union USA/Canada, Dr Anthony Nwobum explained that thirty indigenes of Awka studying different courses in public tertiary institutions across the country were awarded scholarship by the union, while over sixty others will be trained in tailoring, fashion and design, computer technology, aluminium work, bakery among others and will be equipped to start their own business at the end of their training.

He further said that the gestue is their second edition of the programme aimed at getting the youths out of the streets, adding that those selected for the skill empowerment programme will be receiving monthly stipend from the union that will sustain them for the period they will learn the skill. 

In his remarks, the Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Youths, Sports and Special Duties, Mr. Kingsley Ikebudu commended the union for complementing the efforts of the Anambra State Government in poverty alleviation and urged the beneficiaries of the scholarship programme to live up to expectations in order to benefit in subsequent ones, while some of the beneficiaries of the skill acquisition and scholarship programmes, including Chidimma Okechukwu and Favour Agbata assured that they will make their community and the union proud.
