Anambra Advances In Waste Conversion, Targets More Job Opportunities

The Anambra State Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of Felix Odimegwu, has recorded immesurable progress in converting plastic waste into economic value in the State during the first term of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

In 2023, the ministry launched the All Anambra Communities Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge, engaging all the one hundred and seventy -nine communities in Anambra, and exceeded its initial recovery target of ten thousand tonnes, before expanding the programme in 2024 with a new target of one hundred thousand tonnes under Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge 2.0.

Commmissiner Odimegwu said the initiative was structured to create income from waste recovery, with projections of about five thousand indirect jobs for youths and women, while partnerships with the United States Agency for International Development, the Coca-Cola Foundation and TechnoServe Nigeria supported local recyclers with equipment and technical assistance.

He revealed that in 2025, Anambra received national recognition for environmental sustainability, with its waste recovery and recycling programmes, consolidating the state’s waste-to-wealth drive.
