5Th National Youth Games : Team Anambra Qualifies For Male, Female Events

Team Anambra are expected to storm Kwara State for the fifth National Youth games with the zonal elimination now concluded.


Team Anmabra both male and female sides qualified for all the events it entered for in a resounding manner during the four- day sporting programme of the South East Zonal Elimination.


The Tony Oli’s led Anambra state sports Development Commission, ANSDC, with the approval of Governor Willie Obiano, hosted the five states of the zone in a colourful and keenly contested sporting events with Anambra team defeating Abia boys with five goals to nothing in a football match at the Tansi International College , Okpuno while the female team defeated the Imo team with two goals . The Anambra male side in the volley ball, saw off their Imo counterparts in the finals by two goals to nothing while the female side emerged tops in the final game, seeing off Abia also by two goals.


In handball, Anambra boys won their final match by a scoreline of twelve to nine against Abia, with the female side narrowly losing by sixteen to twelve also to their Abia based folks.


Also, the male side defeated team Imo in the finals while their female side came victorious by defeating the Abia girls.
Anambra male team saw off team Ebonyi with thirty runs for zero wicket after one point two overs, while the female team finished as runnerup despite losing in the finals to Ebonyi with sixteen wickets, in cricket.


The Anambra male and female team also will have a full representation in the Beach volley, in Ilorin.
It is expected that Team Anambra, numbering over four hundred with its team officials will embark on a one –week camping and intensive training from the thirtieth of August , 2019 for the main event coming up from seventh to seventeenth, September, in Ilorin , Kwara state capital in Nuremberg, Germany.
In a statement in Abuja, the Chairman of NIDCOM, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa said that the incident was an embarrassment to the country.


She also said that it is shamefully pathetic that an event, which was nobly put together by the Ndi-Igbo community whose members make up the majority of Nigerians living in Germany, ended up in such a disgraceful manner.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa noted that the event was to provide a forum for the Diasporans and various stakeholders to network and facilitate better cooperation between German and Nigerian businesses.
She disclosed that some of the culprits had been apprehended and called on the German government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that there are consequences for their actions.
She also appealed to Nigerians to be of good behaviour wherever they find themselves as such unruly incidents tarnish the image of the country.
Sen. Ekweremadu confirmed the attack in a statement released by his Media Assistant, Uche Anichukwu in Abuja.
