Obiano Extols Buhari For Immortalising Abiola, Wants Zik’s Birthday As National Holiday

Governor Willie Obiano has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for honoring the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, with a national holiday and the renaming of the National Stadium in Abuja, after him.

According to a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, Governor Obiano also added that it has became imperative for the federal government to observe a national holiday in honour of the great Zik of Africa as requested during the commissioning of Zik Mausoleum, earlier this year.

While describing Chief Abiola as a true Nigerian who donated generously to worthy causes and championed quite a number of selfless services Governor Obiano described the renaming of the stadium as “the icing on the cake in the steps taken so far to immortalize a national figure

He said apart from employing Nigerians generously in his organizations regardless of their faith, gender or ethnic origin, Chief Abiola established Udoka, an Igbo newspaper; Amana, an Hausa newspaper; and Isokan, a Yoruba newspaper.

The Governor, while applauding the President for mapping out June twelve as a national holiday, appreciated him for honouring the political hero with a national post humus award as well as backing it with an appropriate bill in the national assembly, describing Chief Abiola as a true democratic who inspired nationalism patriotism and sportsman-like spirit of Nigeria’s first President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.
