Anambra State Assembly Moves To Amend VAPP  Law, Tackles Invasion Of Privacy

A Bill for a Law to amend the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2026, and for other connected purposes, has scaled through its First and Second Readings at the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The proposed legislation is aimed at addressing harm that occurs without physical contact, recognising that covert recording of intimate or private acts constitutes a violation of bodily autonomy, privacy, and psychological integrity.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the plenary called for the adoption of the First and Second Readings of the Bill, which the lawmakers unanimously approved through a voice vote.

The sponsor of the Bill, Honourable Mimi Azikiwe, representing Onitsha North one Constituency, said that the proposed amendment to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2026 seeks to criminalise video recording, audio recording, as well as screenshotting of sexual intimacy, personal nudity, and other private moments without the consent of the individuals involved.
