Commentary: Soludo And Burden Of Public Good

Plato’s idea of the Philosopher-King, as articulated in The Republic, envisioned leaders guided not by greed or the hunger for power, but by wisdom, justice and an unwavering commitment to the common good. Such leaders, Plato argued, are best suited to govern because they understand that authority is a responsibility, not a privilege.

In contemporary Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma  Soludo embodies many of the virtues Plato described.

His determined stand against the forces that sustained the prolonged closure of markets across the state is not merely a political decision, it is a moral one, rooted in the protection of public welfare and economic survival.

Governor Soludo’s resolve to reopen markets, particularly the iconic Onitsha Main Market, reflects a leadership philosophy anchored on the collective good. By staking his personal reputation, integrity, and political future on restoring economic normalcy, he demonstrated uncommon courage. He chose the difficult path, enduring blackmail, name-calling, discreditation and threats because leadership, at its core, demands sacrifice.

The reopening of Onitsha Main Market was more than a commercial event; it was a powerful symbol of hope. For many Ndi Anambra, especially the younger generation, it rekindled confidence in governance and reaffirmed that leadership can still act decisively in defence of the people.

Despite sustained attempts to derail this effort through misinformation, recycled videos of violence, and calculated fear-mongering, the governor stood firm. This resilience is what distinguishes a leader who serves personal interests from one who governs for the public good. Soludo’s actions demonstrate commitment to working not for self, but for society.

Anambra State remains one of Nigeria’s most vibrant economic hubs, home to some of the most industrious traders and entrepreneurs in West Africa. Onitsha Main Market, reputed as the largest market in the region, cannot be destroyed by intimidation unless Ndi Anambra themselves surrender to fear. If the people do not consent to the destruction of their livelihoods, then those who seek to cripple the state’s economy will fail.

The hypocrisy of those behind the so-called sit-at-home order is now glaring. People are permitted to attend church services, social events and social life, yet are threatened for opening shops or conducting lawful business. As long as the economy is strangled, some believe all is well. This contradiction exposes the real agenda of  economic sabotage, not justice.

Governor Soludo deserves commendation for the milestones already achieved in restoring sanity and confidence in Anambra’s economy. However, the struggle is not yet over. The architects of fear continue to scheme, but their influence will diminish if Ndi Anambra rally behind purposeful leadership.

This is a defining moment. Ndi Anambra must stand with a governor who has chosen courage over convenience and public good over personal safety. Those who delight in economic dislocation must be permanently discredited and consigned to irrelevance.

History will remember leaders who acted when silence was easier. In this battle to restore dignity, security, and prosperity to Anambra State, Governor  Soludo has shown that true leadership is, indeed, philosophical in nature.
