Commentary: Welcome To 2026

The global community welcomes 2026 today  in different ways with high expectations.  It  is one of the most  celebrated occasions across the world which ushers in a sense of new beginning and hope for better and brighter future.

While New Year is  celebrated in different ways across the world, it has a common feature of promoting love ,  joy and unity.  In most countries, people often bid the old year goodbye and welcome the new  year with firework while in Nigeria and Anambra state, there are also the unpleasant practices   including burning of disused tyres on roads which adversely affect the life span of tarred roads.

The beginning of every year gives people the opportunity for sober reflection and chance to reassess  the past and plan for the future which  encourages positive, goal-setting and self-improvement,

The New Year is a period of making fresh resolutions to drop certain habits viewed as impediment to progressive lifestyle and imbibe new values that would enhance self fulfilment and actualization of aspirations.

This encourages individuals to take their destiny in their hands with the strong believe  that they  have the power to drop previous mistakes, strengthen their weaknesses  and chart a new course   with positive mind set  and determination to overcome future challenges effectively. So the new year is more than crossing from December to January, it is beyond festivities and goodwill messages.  It is more about changing lifestyle with strong resolve to open a fresh chapter that inspires hope , promotes love, kindness and understanding that will impact positively  on the life of others.

2025 has been a very   challenging  year for Nigerians with increasing insecurity across the country which recently attracted military intervention by America, economic hardship with persistent  double-digit inflation, ethnic and religious tension, increasing national debt profile, unemployment, corruption and very slow economic growth leading to  hunger and poverty.

It is expected that the new year will usher new dawn in Nigeria’s national life that will reverse the narratives of hardship and instability as well as bring relief to the people.

Leaders at all levels should review their polices and programmes to give governance a human face  by focusing on all the socio-economic and political problems challenging the country.

It is not enough to repeat promises to Nigerians. There should be conscious and intentional efforts and measures to uplift the people out of hardship and poverty.
