Commentary: Orumba North Mayor, Barrister Casmir Nwafor Honoured As 2025 Best Local Government Council Mayor In Nigeria

Retired Captain  Casmir Chukwunonso Nwafor,  a lawyer and Mayor of Orumba North Local Government Area was born in Enugu to the family of Late Mr. Joseph Nwafor of Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area and Mrs Patricia Nwafor  of Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, both of Anambra State.  He is married to Dr. Ogechukwu Casmire-Nwafor and the marriage is blessed with four boys.

Barrister Nwafor has a humble beginning and sound academic records. He trained as a Lawyer and was a military officer who rose to the rank of a Captain before voluntarily retiring to join politics.

Barrister Casmir Nwafor is a household name both in community service and politics. In his community Oko, he was National Assistant Secretary, Oko People’s Union and National Legal Adviser before becoming the President-General of the town union.

Governor, Chukwuma Soludo  discovered the leadership prowess of Barrister Nwafor by first appointing him as the Transition Committee Chairman of Orumba North and also created the platform that led to his elevation as the Executive Mayor of Orumba North. Barrister Nwafor has maintained a cordial working relationship with the Governor  and the harmonious relationship has resulted in massive development  in Orumba North.

In just one year and two months in office, Barrister  Nwafor has done pretty well in terms of infrastructural development and service delivery. Some  of the achievements of Barrister Nwafor in Orumba North include the establishment of the Orumba North Mass Transit Limited, the Orumba North Farms Limited which has been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, aimed at transforming agriculture in the area. These two projects will be inaugurated next month.

The administration  has constructed a  one point five Kilometer road in Oko and has awarded the grading and expansion of Omogho-Ndike-Awgbu road,  distributed over seventy thousand plantain suckers to the people of Orumba North and also distributed seed funds to over two hundred traders in the area.

It  has  also completed renovation of the Council Secretariat at Ajalli, built a new Mayor’s office duplex, renovated the deplorable Legislative building into a modern edifice with modern technology and also restored the public power supply as well as restoration of water supply in the Council.

In collaboration with the State security outfit, Udogachi established by Governor  Soludo, Barrister Nwafor has continued to partner with the security operatives as an expert to ensure relative peace and tranquillity in Orumba North. He built a completely new security building in the Council and increased the number of Agunechemba Squard.

On Youth development, the Orumba North Council has initiated a lot of programmes that engage the youth of the area to learn skills and develop their potential and organized the first school sports competition that led to Orumba North winning the male and female categories in the Anambra State schools sports competition organized by the Anambra State Sports Commission this year.

 When Nigeria denied former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, an illustrious son of Orumba North, any honour, the administration of Barrister Nwafor organized a befitting burial for him, named the Orumba North Secretariat Building after him.

He  in addition, attracted the ongoing road construction from the State government that passed through the late Professor Nwosu’s house. In another show of respect, the administration of Barrister Nwafor has renovated the local government Pavilion and named it after Chief Christopher Okechukwu who was the first democratically elected Chairman of Orumba North.

It is these accomplishments and selfless services which the administration of Barrister Nwafor has made in Orumba North that earned him recognitions from both local and International bodies. Recently, he was honoured as the best local government Mayor in Nigeria in Rural Infrastructure as well as overall best Mayor in Nigeria 2025 by the African ‘Three G’ Grassroots Good Governance Awards, which took place in Abuja.

Ndi Anambra especially the people of Orumba North heartily congratulate the Orumba North Mayor, Barrister  Nwafor for doing the State government and Orumba North Council Area proud by clinching the Best local government Mayor of the year award. It is expected  the award will motivate the Mayor to record more accomplishments in his remaining years in office.*To God be the glory.*
