In the complex world of public service, many believe that a posture of gratitude anchors a purposeful life. For Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Deputy Governor of Anambra State, thanksgiving is not a ritual but a daily philosophy, a belief system rooted in deep faith that informs his approach to leadership.
Born into a devout Christian family, Dr Ibezim’s values were shaped by the influence of his late father, Mr O.G. Ibezim, a respected catechist and a secondary school principal. This strong spiritual heritage instilled in him godly principles and a lifelong commitment to community service.
As a young boy, he displayed an early passion for service, actively participating in the Boy Scouts as well as church and community development activities. His academic journey led him to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Nnewi Campus), where he studied medicine. After completing his housemanship, he served the nation before earning a Master’s degree in public health from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
His medical career was marked by steady progression, professionalism, and competence during his years as a full-time civil service medical practitioner.
Dr Ibezim’s entry into politics began under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano. He was first appointed Special Adviser on Youth Mobilisation and later made history as the state’s first Special Adviser on Indigenous Medicine. He also served as Managing Director of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency and chaired the State’s Oxygen Plant, where his leadership delivered timely and strategic operational results.
In 2021, Dr Ibezim’s impressive track record and expertise made him the natural choice of running mate to Professor Chukwuma Soludo on the APGA ticket.
Since their electoral victory, Dr Ibezim has taken on major responsibilities central to the Soludo administration’s vision. He has spearheaded significant sanitation projects immediately assuming office as Deputy Governor, chaired the State Boundary Committee, and overseen key strategic committees, including sports, flood response, and Human Capital Development among others.
His contributions extend beyond public office. He was inducted as a fellow Association of Educational Management and Policy Practitioners. Not long ago, his hometown recently honoured his philanthropic efforts, reflected through the OG and CC Ibezim Foundation, a foundation he opened and runs in memory of his late parents, where he trains and empowers the youths of his community. Because of Ibezim’s attraction of government presence in his community including road construction, job creation and other initiatives, his traditional ruler bestowed on him the esteemed title “Ife Mbaukwu” (The Light of Mbaukwu).
As Dr. Ibezim celebrates his birthday today, November nineteen, which coincides with International Men’s Day, he calls on all Ndi Anambra to join him in thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness and requesting more prayers for the state. The Deputy Governor uses the opportunity to call on men to lead by example in their various families and communities as he wishes for sustained strength and more wisdom as he continues to support Governor Soludo in the collective mission to build a greater and more prosperous Anambra everybody will be proud of as he expresses heartfelt gratitude to God and ndi Anambra for voting for them during the just concluded election.
Happy birthday, Eze Dibia.
