Anambra State Govt Launches Online Register Of Sex Offenders

Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, has launched an online register of sex offenders in the state, a project sponsored by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, RoLAC, Programme, implemented by the International Institute for Electoral Assistance, International IDEA, and Funded by the European Union.

Correspondent, Joseph Egbeocha reports that speaking at the Ministry of Justice, Jerome Udorji State Secretariat Awka, during the launch, the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, said that the online register for sex offenders is a strategy aimed at fighting the upsurge in cases of rape and defilement in the state. 

The Justice Commissioner explained that naming and shaming convicted sex offenders may deter future offenders and reduce the rate of defilement in the state.

In his remark, the Traditional Ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, reiterated his total commitment towards eradicating criminality, especially cases of sexual and gender-based violence, within his community, and urged other Traditional Rulers to follow suit.
