Anambra State House of Assembly has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Caretaker Committee of the Nkpor Butchers Association, directing that fresh elections be conducted in the association with fairness and justice.
House of Assembly Correspondent Emmanuel Chigbata reports that that the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, gave the ruling during plenary after considering a report from the Committee on Public Petitions titled “Gross Violation of the Rules and Regulations at Nkpor Butchers Association, Nkpor Market, and Constant Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace and Order by the Appointed Caretaker Chairman, His Executive and his Elder Brother”.
Presenting the committee’s findings, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, Honourable Obi Nweke, explained that the association’s constitution stipulates that only registered members are permitted to slaughter cows inside the market and noted that the rule is to help the association identify legitimate members, detect when stolen cows are slaughtered, and prevent the sale of dead or unhealthy animals.
However, the committee discovered that the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Chika Obasi, and the Financial Secretary, Mr. Cyprian Ngoka, were not registered members of the association but were allowed to operate within the market in violation of the rules.
