Akpu Town is one of the first ancient towns in the old Aguata region,. In the days of the colonial rule, Akpu belonged to the political bloc known as Ufesiódó, south of the great Odó river. Today, Akpu is one of the towns in Orumba South Local government area in Anambra State.
Over the years, Akpu Town has been led by great leaders. These leaders were known at various times as Àka kpà ófó, Ótóchàrà, Èzè, Warrant Chief and later, Igwè, In their various times, they were custodians of the town’s culture and traditions. They led and commanded the town in various community expeditions, including battles against external aggressions. And they ensured that continuous internal peace, and protection from invaders, were maintained.
At the present, Igwe Marcel Okoli, Ezeukwu the Second, Igwe Chukwu Chiri, is the paramount ruler of Akpu Kingdom. He was chosen and coronated in 2018 after thorough screening conducted by the leadership of the town union, led by Elder Daniel Okoli. He succeeded his predecessor, Igwe Peter Nwafor, the Ezeukwu the First who joined the ancestors on twelfth February, 2013.
Like his predecessors, Igwe Marcel Okoli, in conjunction with his cabinet members led by Chief Godfrey Nwankwo and Chief Mike Udensi, have kept the odious task of keeping the town as one united entity. He is a man endowed with wisdom and fear of God. He is also very humane and a well known philanthropist. He uses his wealth of knowledge and material resources judiciously for the benefit of his subjects. Consequently, Igwe Okoli is well respected and endeared to Ndî Akpu.
Tomorrow, August thirty, Igwe Okoli shall be having his maiden Ofala festival. Preparations are on top gear by all Akpu citizens to make this event very colourful and historic. The entire Akpu Town is currently wearing colourful looks as every creature in the town is in celebration mood.
The Ofala celebration starts with Iwa Jî ofûû by the Igwe in his palace today August twenty-ninth, 2025. Tomorrow, August thirtieth, Igwe and his cabinet, with other leaders of Akpu, will make a flamboyant official outing in the town and later converge at the Ofala ground at Father Tansi Memorial Secondary School, within the premises of Saint Matthews Catholic Church Akpu.
Highlights of the festival includes the conferment of Chieftaincy Title on some distinguished Akpu sons and friends.
Friends, Akpu neighbours, in-laws and well wishers are invited to grace this historic event.
