The wife of Anambra state Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo and founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative was recently honoured with a merit award by the Nigerian Medical Association for her outstanding contributions to public health awareness and healthy living advocacy.
According to the association, the award was in recognition of her relentless commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and sustained efforts towards transforming public health. The Association equally applauded her for promoting and protecting child rights, maternal and infant health, and women’s empowerment as well as touching many lives.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Governor’s wife, the Anambra state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, described the recognition as a strong encouragement and motivation for Dr Soludo to continue her mission of improving lives through health education and advocacy and commended the NMA for acknowledging the Governor’s wife efforts, noting that her work has revolutionized the concept and practice of healthy living across the state.
Since 2006, Dr Soludo has been actively involved in Healthy Living. It was something she began as a passion, translating it into business and then into crusades.
On June thirtieth, 2023, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo was introduced into secondary schools in Anambra State as school clubs and the clubs are presently active in over three hundred and fifty secondary schools in the state.
Healthy living Clubs have also been launched in primary schools in Anambra State, with each school given a first aid box to respond to school emergencies while pad banks have equally been set up in secondary schools with female students and each of the pad banks is restocked at the beginning of every academic term, with enough pads to last through the session.
So far, through the initiative, Dr Soludo has played vital roles in the launching and distribution of millions of Insecticides Treated Nets to households in the state, free cervical cancer screening and treatment, free surgeries for children with cleft lips and palates, free statewide vaccinations for rotavirus, measles, poliomyelitis and other child-killer diseases.
The governor’s wife’s NGO has also organized Healthy living Cooking Competitions, Debates, and cooking lessons for traditional delicacies and distribution of multivitamin supplements to elderly persons in all the political wards of the state.
The Governor’s wife Initiative also distributed anti-shock garments to General Hospitals and mission-owned health facilities in Anambra State and as a result of that intervention, maternal deaths have significantly reduced, especially in rural areas.
Nonye’s Healthy Living Pap, the natural food formula for children with malnutrition are available in all the Primary Health Care facilities in Anambra State since the coverage was expanded in December, 2024.
The Governor’s wife through her NGO also launched organic vegetable garden programme and weekly physical exercise across the twenty-one local government areas of the state aimed at boosting food production, cut down the cost of common foods, promote agricultural education and support organic food consumption across Anambra homes.
Dr Nonye Soludo prefers to maintain very low profile while driving groundbreaking innovations that touch lives.
