The National Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency have carried out a flood disaster response and sensitization exercise for South East Zone, aimed at equiping residents of flood-prone communities with the knowledge and tools needed to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding.
Speaking at the event which was held at Okoti, Ogbaru Local Government Area, following recent predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency indicating a high risk of flooding in parts of the country, including Ogbaru, the NEMA’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Kenneth Oyong, emphasized the urgency of public awareness, noting that the simulation exercise is part of proactive steps to educate communities on how to respond during emergencies, and assured the public of NEMA’s readiness to deploy rescue operations, and distribute relief materials to displaced persons.

On his part, Lieutenant Kenechukwu Njieze of Fourteen Field, Regiment Onitsha, the Disaster Management Coordinator of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State Chapter,Mr. Peculiar Orji, and a member of the Federal Fire service, Anambra State Command, Uzonwanne Okechukwu, affirmed the agency’s commitment to swift rescue operations, saying that the Red Cross is actively working to register vulnerable residents in hard-to-reach areas to ensure timely delivery of aid when needed.
