Commentary: 25th Anniversary And Combined Convocation Ceremonies Of The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University

Since Tuesday twentieth to  Saturday twenty-fourth May 2025, all roads lead to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University as the University community celebrates  twenty-fifth Anniversary of the institution as well as the combined convocation ceremonies. 

According to  the Programme of events from the University, an Interdenominational Service and Medical Outreach took  place on Tuesday twentieth May at the Uli Campus of the University with the title  “BACK TO OUR ROOT”. It was an opportunity to reconnect with the Campus that gave birth to other Campuses. 

On Wednesday twenty-first May, 2025, the University  celebrated the Founders and Heritage Day where the University made strong  statement of its multiculturalism and diversity. On this day, awards were given to people who are part of the heritage and legacies of the University. 

Other activities include the convocation lecture on  Thursday twenty-second May, 2025 titled “Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University  at twenty-five: Advancing Partnerships for Global Impacts”. The week long activities culminates with the combined convocation ceremonies spanning a period of five academic sessions truncated  by the COVID-19 epidemic and other factors.

The First Degree convocation ceremonies on Friday twenty-third May 2025, has over ten thousand graduands receiving their degrees. The Silver Jubilee will culminate in the convocation for the award of postgraduate degrees and honorary causas. 

The Honorary Causas is the highest honour to be bestowed on an individual by a University. It is awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves as change agents through exemplary contributions to their profession and outstanding developmental services to the society. Mrs  Nonye Soludo,  the Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, is to be honored in that capacity as the University confers an honorary causa on her for her pet project, Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo Initiative which has  wide acceptance not just as a way of life but a way to be alive. Others in this category include; Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, Chairman Pinnatech Group,  Igwe Alexander Onyido,  the traditional ruler of Ogidi community,  Lady Ada Chukwudozie, the Southeast Chairman, Manufacture’s Association of Nigeria, and  Sir Dozie Mbanefo the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of New Crystal Communications. 

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu started in two thousand as Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH), later changed to Anambra State University (ANSU) in 2006 and by the Anambra State House of Assembly Law 2014 metamorphosed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University with three Campuses in Igbariam, Uli and Awka. 

The University has grown from five hundred Students when it first started to twenty-three thousand five hundred Students. It has grown from five Faculties and twenty Departments to fifteen Faculties and seventy-three Departments. 

As COOU celebrates its Silver Jubilee, it appreciates with pride the contributions of past Governors, Vice Chancellors, Lecturers, and Students and her  Alumni are making their marks in various spheres of life and flying high the flags and motto of the University , “Education for Development.”

This twenty-five Years anniversary provides the opportunity to celebrate the great men and women who have passed through the University and reconnect with them with great hope. In line with the mantra of  Governor Chukwuma  Soludo to Ndi Anambra  of building a livable and prosperous Anambra, COOU has continued to rebrand itself to take its pride of place in the comity of Universities in Nigeria and beyond. She is passionately doing the three Vs of Values, Viability, and Visibility.

As COOU celebrates its twenty-five years of existence, it continues to be a beacon of hope and light for generations to come.
