Today Is World Meteorological Day

As the world marks this year’s “World Meteorological Day” today, experts have emphasized the urgent need for improved weather monitoring, climate action, and disaster preparedness.

An environmentalist , Mr. Tochukwu Nwankwo while sharing his thoughts on the significance of meteorology and its impact on society, stressed the importance of reliable weather forecasting in mitigating disasters, pointing out that accurate forecasting allows governments and communities to prepare adequately and not caught unawares by disasters. Speaking on climate change in Africa, an environmental researcher, Lady Maryanne Ononigwe highlighted Africa continent’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters, and observed that though the continent contributes the least to global carbon emissions, yet it is among the hardest hit by climate change, such as rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns which threaten food security, livelihoods and recommended stronger environmental policies to combat these issues.
