Democracy Day: Tinubu Asks Nigerians To Uphold Ideals Of June 12

As Nigerians celebrate thirty-two years after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Chief Moshood Abiola, mixed reactions greeted the state of democratic governance in the country.

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Social Democratic Party, SDP, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, while dissecting the state of democracy under the President Bola Tinubu administration, raised dust over the country’s democratic institutions, including allegations of executive overreach, judicial interference, and marginalization of local governance structures, concluding that democracy in Nigeria is endangered.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu, in his address to the nation, called on citizens to rededicate themselves to the ideals of June 12; which are freedom, transparent and accountable government, social justice, active citizen participation, and a just society where no one is oppressed.
