Partial Compliance In Awka To Biafra Day Sit -at – home Directive

Commercial and social activities were partially paralyzed in Awka, the Anambra State capital yesterday as residents marked Biafra Day,

Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that this was observed when ABS news crew visited parts of the city; like Aroma junction, Eke Awka market, Regina Ceili junction, and the popular UNIZIK junction, where some shops were seen open, and many others under lock and key, and vehicular movement noticeably lighter than usual, including on the popular Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, all in response to the sit-at-home directive by pro-Biafra agitators.

An Awka resident who is of Yoruba tribe, Mr. Adeleke Richard, commended Ndi Igbo for remembering their fallen heroes who fought for the well-being of the tribe, urged the Nigerian government to look into the cry of the Igbos and consider granting them the freedom they are agitating for, expressing believe that the Igbo tribe will make a great nation if given the chance.

Others, including Mr. Obinna Ofim, and Simeon Njiku lamented the impact of the Nigerian Civil War on the Igbos, asking the Nigerian government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and put a stop to the sufferings of Ndi Igbo.

Biafra Day, observed annually on May 30, is a day set aside by some people in the South-East to remember those who died during the Nigerian Civil War, and the day often witnesses partial or total lockdowns in the region, driven by calls for remembrance and protest by separatist groups.
