Anambra State Government has taken delivery of five hundred pieces of life jackets donated to the State by the Federal Government through the federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for Inland Water Transport in the State.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Anambra State Ministry of Transport, the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Patricia Igwebuike, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Director of Maritime Abiotic Resources of the ministry, Dr Uzoamaka Okereke said that Anambra is among the states mapped out for the presentation of the life jackets to boost safety on river transportation in the states and reduce boat mishaps, even as she said that the move is part of the ongoing renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu to ensure better life for Nigerians.
In their Goodwill Messages, the Managing Director NIWA, Mr Bola Oyebanji represented by the Director Maritime Services, Engineer Dakio Horsefall, the Officer in charge of Marine, in Anambra State, Mr Nandom Vongjen, the Executive Director Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Sir Paul Odenigbo, represented by Mr Emmanuel Izukwu, and the chairman of Boat Operators Mr Cyril Ezekwere, while the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Transport, Engineer Michael Obiekwe appreciated Anambra State Government for providing the platform and Federal Government for the initiative of donating life jackets and for sensitizing the public on the need for safety and caution on waterways.
Receiving the life jackets, the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Patricia Igwebuike said the gesture is historic as it exemplified the greater synergy and collaboration between the national, sub national governments championed by the President Bola Tinubu administration, adding that Anambra State Government has continued to take measures aimed at modernizing and improving the safety of lives and properties on the waterways.
