FRSC Records 10% Reduction In Road Crashes, Increase In Fatalities

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says it has recorded ten percent reduction in the number of road crashes between 2023 and 2024, although the crashes with fatalities increased by seven percent.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who gave the statistics at Amawbia during Sunday mass held to mark activities of the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, said the corps recorded thirty-one thousand one hundred and fifty-four road crashes with injuries in 2024 alone, regretting that the statistics are not just numbers, but represent lives lost, families shattered and communities affected, assuring that FRSC shall continue to enforce the urban speed limit for vehicles as recommended by the World Health Organization, WHO.

Mr Mohammed, who was represented by the Anambra State Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander, revealed that in a bit to address the challenges, FRSC is actively working with government agencies, communities and partners to advocate for the inclusion of pedestrians bridges, sidewalks, zebra crossings and bicycle lanes in road designs and construction projects, as well as intensify campaigns to promote safe walking and cycling practices; targeting both drivers and vulnerable road users.

In a homily during the mass, the Parish Priest of Saint Mathew’s Catholic Church Amawbia, Reverend Father Michael Onwukaike, urged Christians to make prayer the foundation of their journey, show love always and most importantly create time for God.
