Anambra State Government said that it has received with great concern numerous complaints from citizens regarding the disruptive and harmful activities of some masquerades, revelers and their accompanying groups during masquerade festivals and other celebrations.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Entertainment, Mr Don Onyenji, said while the government fully supports the preservation and celebration of Igbo rich cultural heritage, it strongly condemns the reported acts of violence, extortion and public disturbances perpetrated under the guise of the festival.
The statement noted that specifically, there have been alarming reports of physical assault on innocent citizens, motorists, and Keke NAPEP riders, extortion and intimidation of passers-by, causing fear and panic among residents.
It noted that these actions are unlawful and unacceptable, and are contrary to existing laws in Anambra, and urged all Presidents General of Town Unions and Traditional Rulers to immediately rein in the masquerade groups and their followers, ensuring they operate within the bounds of the law.
