Commentary: Promoting Responsive Governance In Nigeria

Government exists  primarily  to provide and protect the citizens especially    powerless, voiceless and helpless individuals in a given country.

Therefore, it is abnormal when citizens begin to fight and discredit the officials of government  working to maintain sanity and stability in the society .

Some governors including Governor Chukwuma Soludo have distinguished themselves through their commitment to infrastructural development, economic reforms, social programs and  good governance. These governors are clearly cut above average, paying attention to even small details to uplift the quality of life of the people . To them governance is simply a matter of deep passion  and personal   commitment to meet expectations of the masses. Nothing less satisfies them as they approach governance the same  way they would approach other important things in their life.

Unfortunately, their efforts are often hampered by a myriad of obstacles that serve as clog in the wheel of growth, progress and development.  Some of them have witnessed adversaries  who deploy every available means to frustrate and discredit their hard work. They also face fierce resistance from interest groups, sabotage from corrupt officials ,  contractors and politicians  who prefer a system that allows them to siphon public funds. Sometimes government efforts to boost state revenue base, through   investments and internally generated revenue, to argument  inadequate  federal allocations; are undermined by self seeking individuals who often put personal interest above collective welfare of the people.

Oftentimes many performing governors are targeted for their efforts in confronting criminal elements. Their initiatives towards crime fighting  and prevention are criticised, condemned and sometimes sabotaged perhaps by those who benefit from proceeds of crime and criminality. This challenge  does not only slow  down pace of  development but  also sustain vicious circle of threat to life and property of the people . For these governors to succeed in their transformative agenda, there is  need for greater public awareness, political will and systemic reforms that  will shield them from the disruptive elements that threaten their work

In Anambra State for instance,  Governor Chukwuma Soludo has frontly confronted crime fighting through Anambra State Homeland Security Law, Operation Udo Ga Achi Security Initiatives and Agunechemba Security network to eliminate and eradicate violent crimes including armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, ritual killings , obnoxious and unwholesome practices that  promote all forms of  crime and get rich syndrome. This is yielding the desired results within a short time and has continued to receive applause from Ndi Anambra.

Governor Soludo has demonstrated commitment towards  cleaning up  Anambra State of evil, bloodletting  and pollution.

The federal government, civil society  organizations and the  citizenry  should   support good governance and ensure  that those who strive to build a better Nigeria are not continually burdened by unnecessary obstacles and deliberate attempt to pull them down.   A performing governor should be an asset to the nation, not a target for sabotage.
